New Zealand Police announced that a large-scale evacuation center is running the Agency website. According to a press release, the earthquake killed an undetermined number of people throughout the city, including two passengers of a bus crushed the buildings had fallen to them.
U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck just before 1:00 Tuesday (19:00 Monday ET), and a 5.6-magnitude aftershock hit about 15 minutes later.
New Zealand Herald reported that the phone lines were out of the region, roads were cracked - in some cases, to raise up to one meter (1 yard) - and water pipes had burst, flooding several streets.
New Zealand TVNZ Transit Authority said it had been unable to reach their team in Christchurch and Lyttelton Tunnel, located near the epicenter.
