Thousands Attend Job Fair KC Zoo - Department of Labor said the number of unemployment fell to 8.9 percent. But job seekers have participated in many local job fairs on Saturday. Thousands of people flocked to Kansas City Zoo first Job Fair.
Zoo officials wonder if the figures are really the target. KC Zoo expected maybe 500 people.
"I really had my fingers crossed last night oh we would get a few hundred people," said zoo director Randy Wisthoff.
Instead, nearly 2,000 people attended the job fair on Saturday.
"We were just standing outside 10:30 to 11:30, long, long series," said Patricia Coberly job hunter.
Wisthoff said that shows the unemployment rate does not change much at the local level.
"I think there is some indication that a large number of people seeking work," said Wisthoff.
Applicants had many reasons to participate in Job Fair.
"I am currently unemployed and trying to get out of there," said Coberly.
Wisthoff says most of the candidates are at the heart of the city. He says many are willing to do anything.
"We are paying the minimum wage," said Wisthoff. "They are all seasonal positions will be maybe a few days a week."
Most jobs at the zoo and KC Starlight is a seasonal part-time and minimum wage. They do not provide benefits.
